Eight

Around a yawn, Fiona made her way toward the teacher’s lounge for her lunch break. She was wishing the day was over—at least they were halfway through. As she passed the nurse’s office she glanced inside, then stopped, backed up, and took another look into the office.

“Mrs. Mills…I never expected to see you…here,” she said around a gasp she was hoping the woman had not detected. But in fact, she was positively shocked to see Mrs. Mills sitting at Melinda Perry’s desk. She was wearing a pair of blue scrubs with a nametag clipped to her shirt that read: Bethann Mills, School Nurse.

Mrs. Mills smiled brightly. “Please, call me Bethann. I’m no longer just a parent of one of your students—I’m your colleague. I told you I have a degree—I have a nursing degree, and now I’m the new school nurse. Well, at least until this murder thing with Lucky Maguire is sorted out.”

Fiona didn’t know what to say. She didn’t know how to react. It was most obvious that Mrs. Mills—Bethann, was delighted to have the nurse’s position, and God knew the Mills family desperately needed the money, but she simply wasn’t prepared for Melinda’s replacement so soon. “Oh…I didn’t know they’d be replacing Melinda so…quickly. I mean, I’m happy for you…er…I know you were possibly looking for a job—it’s just a shock.”

“I totally understand. Believe me, I feel badly for how I came to get the position, but at the same time, we need the money so badly. Under state guidelines, schools must have a nurse, and so they had to replace Nurse Melinda right away. This position would be perfect—I mean, I’d be close to Sophia if she needs me. But the job may be a temporary thing—depending,” Bethann explained.

“Well…happy to have you aboard, even if it turns out to be temporary. I suppose I can just bring Sophia here at the end of the day instead of to the bus port?”

“That would be perfect. Thank you so much, Fiona. Have a nice lunch.”

Fiona nodded in reply, then continued down the hall. It was most evident how pleased Mrs. Mills…er…Bethann was with her new position. Her usually disheveled hair had been brushed and pulled back into a tidy ponytail. She was wearing a pair of silver hoop earrings, mascara, and a soft pink lipstick, which suited her complexion nicely. Her face wasn’t pinched in stress, nor did she sound so stuffed-up when she spoke.

Mixed emotions whirled through Fiona’s heart. The school nurse position would indeed be a godsend for the Mills family. Not so much for Melinda Perry.
